A recent service call to EcoTech Pest Control caused an immediate dispatch of our exterminators to a home in Blue Point, NY recently. Vermin were taking over the 1st & 2nd floors of a house. Our top rodent technicians arrived on scene to confirm a major rat problem. There were also mice present. Find out where these rats & mice were found. Rats and mice typically seek shelter in warmer areas during the colder Winter months. Rats have strong teeth capable of cutting through many materials including wood, sheet rock, plaster, and vinyl siding. When it comes time to survive, they work extra hard at making their way into warmer climates. Inside the walls of a a home or office, in the insulation behind your walls and inside cabinets where food is stored are prime locations for rats, mice and other rodents to call their new home.
Initial reports from the tenants of the home in Blue Point said they saw mice in the kitchen and pantry. The tenants also report seeing rats on the 2nd floor which is under construction. It is believed that this is where the rats were making entry. Upon inspection by our exterminators, mice and rat droppings were found throughout the home. Inside of the pantry, on the lower level, major signs of mice infestation were present.
Infestation is a bold word to use when speaking about rats and mice. Infestation indicates the area has been overrun by rodents. In this case, it was estimated that there were over 50 mice found inside the pantry alone. The pantry is a great place to find food for survival. We strongly recommend that you place your food in air tight, sealed containers to prevent rodents and other pests from getting inside of your food. Open boxes, unsealed canisters and other poorly stored food is a prime target for rodents and pests.
To get control of the situation, several rat and mice traps were installed as well as glue boards. This will help control the population and get a better idea of how bad the situation is. Our service plan for this home covers 3 additional visits, every 3 days to check the traps and glue boards and safely remove and clean out any traps with activity.
Maintaining good housekeeping in and around your home is important for keeping rodents and pests from choosing your place to call their new home.
- Remove any garbage or lumber from around your home or yard
- If you must store lumber or garbage in your yard, do you your best to limit how long you keep it. The longer you keep it, the more of a chance rodents will find it and call it home
- Securely fasten covers to containers inside of your cabinets and pantry
- Use plastic storage containers to deter rodents and pests from entering and contaminating your food supply
